Named scholarships & funds
When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of ¹ú²úÂ×Àí alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Shallenberger, Peggy J. Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Peggy J. Shallenberger Memorial Endowed Scholarship was established in November 2009 by the colleagues of Peggy J. Shallenberger. The scholarship was endowed in 2012 through a gift from Peggy's family and revised again in 2022.
For 35 years, Peggy was a valued colleague and friend at The University of Akron's Wayne College Campus. She held a number of positions in her time at Wayne Campus, from student services counselor to admissions and job placement coordinator. In 2002, she became the administrative assistant to the Wayne Campus full-time faculty, a position at which she especially excelled. Peggy was held in high regard by her colleagues and always reminded her co-workers of the central mission of Wayne Campus - service to students. She always sought what was best for students and their success.
This memorial scholarship will serve as a legacy to her service, dedication, and good spirit. She will always be missed and remembered by many friends and alumni.
Eligible students must be working toward a degree or certificate and enrolled at Wayne Campus. Preference will be given to students with the greatest financial need. The Office of Student Financial Aid at The University of Akron Wayne Campus will select the recipients annually. If there are no eligible candidates at Wayne Campus, then any student who meets the scholarship criteria at The University of Akron may be selected as the recipient. Selection of recipients not enrolled at Wayne Campus will be made in conjunction with the University Scholarship Committee. Multiple students may be able to benefit from the scholarship as funds are available. The scholarship shall not exceed the cost of tuition and fees for any recipient.
