Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of ¹ú²úÂ×Àí alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

University of Akron Student Financial Emergency Fund

The University of Akron Student Financial Emergency Fund was established in August 2019 and will be used to provide assistance for non-tuition related, emergency expenses to University of Akron students facing financial hardships.  The fund will be administered through the University’s Office of Student Success under its program currently known as ZipAssist.

ZipAssist is the central information hub, intentionally designed to share available resources, and provide support and assistance to help students be successful at The University of Akron and achieve their educational goals.

Students who are identified as having an emergency financial need that would cause them to drop out of college, but for assistance through The University of Akron Student Financial Emergency Fund, are eligible to apply.  A financial emergency is an unforeseen expense that, if not resolved quickly, could lead to the student’s departure from the University and loss of momentum toward degree completion.

In order to be considered for a grant from The University of Akron Student Financial Emergency Fund, the student must meet a minimum GPA requirement and be seen in good standing with the University. The student must also be able to provide supportive documentation of the financial emergency.

Recipients are eligible to receive up to $700, or more at the discretion of the Director of ZipAssist, as a one-time grant.  University ZipAssist staff will work with recipients to make award determinations and contact third-party entities to arrange needed payments.  Students who receive assistance from The University of Akron Student Financial Emergency Fund will be required to participate in ZipAssist’s financial responsibility and literacy programs, which include outcome-based webinars, workshops, in-classroom trainings, as well as innovative and interactive programs to engage students in conversations about budgeting, financial well-being, and tuition/fee gaps.
