Named scholarships & funds
When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of ¹ú²úÂ×Àí alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Makam, Raj and Archana Endowed Scholarship
The Raj and Archana Makam Endowed Scholarship was established in February 2015 and revised in June 2019, when Raj and Archana Makam endowed the scholarship. The scholarship was created in honor of Mr. Raj Makam’s legacy and pride of his alma mater, The University of Akron.
Mr. Makam, an immigrant from India, first arrived in the United States as a graduate student at The University of Akron. Mr. Makam valued the education he received at the University, as well as the warm welcome by the University and the City of Akron upon his arrival in Akron.
The Raj and Archana Makam Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to a deserving female U.S. citizen currently residing in the United States and enrolled as a full-time major in Biomedical Engineering at the University. Award amounts may vary, depending on the availability of funds. The recipient will have at least a 3.0 grade point average.
In addition to the above criteria, a selection committee from the College of Engineering will consider students based on socioeconomic factors and demonstration of an exceptional work ethic.
