Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of ¹ú²úÂ×Àí alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Lewis, Max H. and Kary S. S.T.R.I.V.E. Endowed Scholarship

The Success Through Resilience, Initiative, Values, and Endurance (S.T.R.I.V.E.) Scholarship was established in 2013 by Amber Kern, Jordan Pana, and Liz Weber, College of Business Administration Honors Students at The University of Akron who desired to help fellow students with financial difficulties complete their degrees. The students wished to support the efforts of hardworking students just as they had been supported throughout their educational careers.

In February 2016, Max H. and Kary S. Lewis endowed the S.T.R.I.V.E. Scholarship, creating a fund that will provide financial assistance – in perpetuity – to hardworking, deserving students in ¹ú²úÂ×Àí’s College of Business Administration, just as the original student-founders had intended. In honor of the couple’s generosity, the fund was renamed The Max H. and Kary S. Lewis S.T.R.I.V.E. Endowed Scholarship.

Candidates for The Max H. and Kary S. Lewis S.T.R.I.V.E. Endowed Scholarship must be enrolled in ¹ú²úÂ×Àí’s College of Business Administration and majoring in business. Applicants must demonstrate persistence toward degree completion (with a minimum of 100 credit hours completed), financial need, and have a GPA of 2.8 or higher.

The College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee will select recipients. The Committee will consider factors such as financial need, credit hours completed, GPA, and a student’s individual situation.

In support of this student-led initiative, Max and Kary Lewis, who contributed toward the original scholarship, have provided a generous gift to endow the fund. Students will provide additional support through fundraising efforts. The first S.T.R.I.V.E. scholarship was awarded in the spring 2014 semester. The number of scholarships given and the amount awarded will be determined by fund availability and the need for assistance.
