Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of ¹ú²úÂ×Àí alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Alfred W. Wilson Jr. was a resident of Akron, Ohio, for 79 years. Since 1996, after an unfortunate heart attack, Mr. Wilson became a patient of the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation group at The Akron General Wellness Center.  The Wellness Center is a community of patients and highly knowledgeable, dedicated, and friendly nurses specializing in cardiopulmonary diseases. The Alfred W. Wilson Jr. Gerontology Nursing Scholarship is intended for students of the Graduate School of Nursing in the Center for Gerontological Health Nursing and Advocacy at The University of Akron. More specifically, graduate students who choose advanced practice in Gerontological Health Nursing either through the nurse practitioner track or as a clinical nurse specialist. The scholarship is open to students who are passionate about cardiopulmonary diseases among the elderly and seek a nursing career in gerontology. Mrs. Wilson and family encourage high-achieving students to apply for this award by completing a statement of intent about their contributions and future involvement in elderly health.

The final recipient will be chosen by Mrs. E. Elaine Wilson in conjunction with the director of the Graduate School of Nursing in the Center for Gerontological Health Nursing and Advocacy based on his/her academic achievement and commitment to the field of nursing. This award is to be used for coursework in the student’s program of study.  This award will be granted annually to a student in the Graduate School of Nursing at The University of Akron.
