Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of ¹ú²úÂ×Àí alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

DiDonato, Anthony and Jane Endowed Scholarship in the College of Business Administration

The Anthony & Jane DiDonato Endowed Scholarship in the College of Business Administration was created in November 2020, by Anthony and Jane DiDonato.  The DiDonato Scholarship was established in recognition of The University of Akron’s 150th Sesquicentennial Anniversary and the DiDonato’s love of the University.

Anthony D. (Tony) DiDonato was born January 10, 1932.  He is a native of Akron, Ohio, graduating from Garfield High School.  He is one of seven DiDonato children, all of whom graduated from The University of Akron.  The late Leopold and Beatrice DiDonato instilled the necessity and importance of a college education in their family.

Tony is married to Jane DiDonato.  The couple met at the Saveway Grocery store while still in high school.  They married in 1954.  Not having any children of their own, they were blessed to be Aunt and Uncle to 12 nieces and nephews.

Tony started in the insurance industry in 1957 and was associated with State Farm for 40 ½ years.  Jane served as the secretary, working alongside Tony.  Together, they served many families with their insurance needs.  Tony was always keeping up with the industry classes and in 1985 achieved the Chartered Life Underwriters (CLU) status.  Following retirement, he served as an independent investment professional.

Tony graduated from The University of Akron, earning a B.S. in business administration in 1954.  As a student, he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity.  Active with his alma mater for over 50 years, Tony has served as a member of the Varsity “A” Association and the ZAC Advancement Council.  He is an avid Zips Athletics fan and is a long-standing season ticket holder for men’s basketball.  Tony and Jane are very active in the community, donating to and serving on many different boards to make Akron a better place to live and work for everyone.

It is the intent of the donors that The Anthony and Jane DiDonato Endowed Scholarship in the College of Business Administration be awarded annually as funds are available from the endowment.  Undergraduate students admitted to their major in the College of Business Administration, who are full-time and have demonstrated financial need are eligible for consideration.  First consideration will be given to students who are preparing for careers in risk management and insurance.

Recipient selection and scholarship amounts will be determined annually, as funds are available, by the College of Business Administration’s Scholarship Committee.  The scholarship may be renewed at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.
