Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of ¹ú²úÂ×Àí alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Jackson, Harry E. Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Scholarship

The Harry E. Jackson Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Scholarship was established through a gift from Harry E. Jackson to support gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students at The University of Akron. Mr. Jackson earned three degrees from the University: a bachelor in accounting (’70), a master in accounting (’74), and jurist doctor (’80). Mr. Jackson worked for BFGoodrich Corporation for 27 years, retiring as director of international and federal taxes in 1999.

Mr. Jackson’s goal is to make this scholarship available only to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students. Selection is to be based upon financial need and academic achievement. Scholarship applications will be sent to the appropriate campus organizations. Grants will cover tuition, fees, books, room and board, all or in part. Separate grants also may be provided for educational programming for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered groups. Selection will be made by a committee comprised of the following personnel: Harry E. Jackson; faculty advisor(s) to the University organization(s) for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students; and representative(s) from the Office of Student Financial Aid.
