When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of ¹ú²úÂ×Àí alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

The Department of Development does not accept applications for or distribute scholarships. Scholarships are distributed through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid.

Jones, Gary L. and Sue Endowed Scholarship for Working Students
The Gary L. and Sue Jones Endowed Scholarship for Working Students was established by Gary and Sue Jones in 2018. Gary L. Jones was an educator from 1969 to 2006, teaching and counseling elementary through high school special education students. He attended The University of Akron and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969 and Master of Arts degree in 1974 in Education. He also held teaching certificates in five disciplines. Gary taught in several states and enjoyed interacting with his students. Sue Jones’ career was in the world of business from 1967 to 2014, working in manufacturing, commercial banking and software development. She attended The University of Akron for two years and completed her bachelor’s degree in 1982 in Business at Capital University. She retired from Wachovia Bank as a Group Executive and later worked with several start-up software companies. Both Mr. and Mrs. Jones worked while obtaining their degrees. In retirement they enjoyed volunteering, travel, fishing and golf.
The Gary L. and Sue Jones Endowed Scholarship for Working Students provides assistance to students motivated to achieve college degrees by working to help pay for their academic coursework, books and fees. Consideration will be given to students enrolled full-time in any University of Akron major degree program, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher, and who demonstrate hardship and/or financial need.
The scholarship is renewable provided recipients remain in good academic standing and are working toward degree completion in four to five years. Scholarships will be applied directly to a student’s account for tuition and fees. Recipients will be selected by the University Scholarship Committee and scholarship amounts and number of recipients will vary annually depending on available funds.
