Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of ¹ú²úÂ×Àí alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Families Helping Families: College of Health Professions Fund

The Families Helping Families: College of Health Professions Fund was established in July 2020 by faculty, staff, and friends of The University of Akron College of Health Professions (CHP). College leaders and supporters created the fund to provide meaningful assistance to CHP students facing economic hardships, a situation that became increasingly important during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Families Helping Families: College of Health Professions Fund was established in 2020 in celebration of The University of Akron's 150th Sesquicentennial Anniversary.

The Families Helping Families: College of Health Professions Fund is designated for full and part-time students enrolled in The University of Akron College of Health Professions who demonstrate economic need. Students may seek help for expenses such as tuition, books, food, gas, car repairs, rent, utility payments, or other unexpected financial hardships that would prevent their continued enrollment and progress toward degree completion.

Applications for assistance must be made through the College of Health Professions Student Success Office. Following an application, the Student Success Office will work with the respective school liaison to decide scholarship and award amounts for selected recipients. These amounts and how they are disbursed will vary depending on the gravity of the situation and the type of support needed.

Use of monies for qualified educational expenses are not taxable and will be applied to the student's account, if possible, as a scholarship to the student. Use of monies for anything other than qualified educational expenses would be considered an award and will be reportable by the recipient.
