Dr. Xiong Gong

, a Professor in the School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering who also holds a secondary position as a Professor in the Department of Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering at ¹ú²úÂ×Àí, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (), the United Kingdom organization recently announced.

Gong was nominated by his peers and received this award in recognition of his accomplishments and efforts that have made an impact in the field of chemical sciences.

"I am deeply honored to be a RSC fellow,” said Gong. “I am absolutely humbled to join the list – a group of extremely respected chemical science researchers who are recognized around the world."

The RSC provides an internationally recognized framework for career development, shared resources and events that allow interdisciplinary collaboration, and set standards to help its members succeed in the chemistry field. It maintains professional qualifications and sets high standards of competence and conduct for professional chemists and provides a wide range of services and activities of value both to members and the community.

Contributions to chemical science

Dr. Gong joined ¹ú²úÂ×Àí in 2010 after working as a manager and senior scientist at CBrite Inc., co-founded by Prof. Alan J. Heeger (Nobel Laureate) in Santa Barbara, and as a senior scientist at the University of California Santa Barbara for 10 years.

In the last decade, advanced fundamental science and engineering in organic/polymer and hybrid inorganic-organic electronics materials for renewable energy generation and storage, and optical and image sensors. Currently, his group focuses on semiconducting polymers, organic semiconductors, inorganic quantum dots, solar cells, broadband photodetectors, thermoelectric materials and devices, solid-state supercapacitors, and self-powered flexible electronics, solution-processed transparent electrodes for flexible electronics, advanced manufacturing, and nano printing.

During his career at ¹ú²úÂ×Àí, Gong has received over $7M in grants from the Air Force Scientific Research Program, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, 3M, and industrial companies to support research activities in his group.

Research achievements

Dr. Gong has accomplished 250+ articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals including Science. His publications have been widely referred to and with peer citation over 27,630 times and gained an H-index of 72. He also contributed 32 granted patents (6 have listened), 5 pending patents, and 8 book chapters. He has received many international and national awards and honors including the top 1% of most cited scientists (since 2014 till now), the world's most influential scientific minds, the top 2% of the world’s top scientists, among the list of the world’s top 10,000 scientists, the NSF career award, Alexander von Humboldt research fellowship (Germany), 3M non-tenured faculty award (USA), K. C. Wong education foundation fellow (Hong Kong), the Louis A. Hill, Jr. award, and outstanding researcher award at ¹ú²úÂ×Àí.

In addition to his academic titles, Gong serves as associate editor of Organic Electronics, deputy editor of Emergent Materials, and editorial board member of Scientific Reports, Polymers, and Chinese Chemistry Letters.
