The University of Wisconsin-Platteville set the stage for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI) Surveying Competition, held from June 10-12. Sixteen surveying teams, each a winner of their respective regional competitions, gathered to showcase their skills through five challenging tasks encompassing topographic mapping, pacing, level looping, construction stakeout and sewer line analysis.

Among the competitors was The University of Akron's (¹ú²úÂ×Àí) surveying team comprised of civil engineering students Maddie Richards, Morgan Ragaller, Rhett Brodie, Will Prescott, Meganne Chapman and Amelia Roch.

Prior to the event, each team was required to submit a topographic map. On the first day of the competition, the teams presented their maps, explaining their thought process and highlighting the ways in which it was created.

The second day of the competition featured practical skills as teams tackled the field tasks. These hands-on challenges required precision, accuracy and critical thinking, and for each task a team of up to four members was randomly assigned. The emphasis on accuracy underscored the importance of attention to detail in the field of surveying and emphasized the significance of precise data collection and analysis.

The ASCE UESI Surveying Competition not only provided an opportunity for participants to showcase their skills but also fostered a rich learning environment. Networking among students, professionals and industry experts created invaluable connections. The competition also showcased the latest advancements in surveying techniques and methodologies, inspiring participants to push boundaries and contribute to the field's ongoing development.

"The team did a great job at this year’s ASCE UESI Surveying Competition! We learned a lot over the course of the past year and from participating in the competition," said Meganne Chapman. "I am looking forward to expanding the team and seeing what we can do next year!"

Congratulations to ¹ú²úÂ×Àí’s surveying team for their exceptional representation of our program and the College of Engineering and Polymer Science.
