TESOL Endorsement

The TESOL Endorsement program is designed to give K-12 teachers (including Special Education teachers) an understanding of how to teach English as a second language. The program of study provides multiple opportunities to explore best practices in teaching English as a second language and meet the needs of English learners (ELs). The program provides a solid foundation in linguistics, second language acquisition theory, second language pedagogy, and opportunities to observe and practice approaches to teaching ELs.

Two ways to obtain this endorsement:

  • A grant through the NE Ohio ACHIEVE Project for those licensed employed teachers and administrators of participating school districts. Twenty-five applicants will be chosen each year through the 2021-22 academic year. See details
  • Traditional non-grant Graduate Level Endorsement, open to all licensed teachers and administrators. See details

Requirements

  • The TESOL Endorsement is required to teach English as a second language in an Ohio public/chartered school. It must be attached to a teaching license.
  • Passing the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) Test for English to Speakers of Other Languages is required at the end of the program.
  • Non-native speakers of English must have a minimum score of 79 on the internet-based TOEFL.
